With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Department of Economics at Vanderbilt University will recruit new Ph.D. students whose research interests include health and health policy. 
The Department of Economics announces the creation of two new funds to support the research activities of doctoral students and undergraduate honors students. Two existing funds support diverse activities within the Department and provide scholarships for students in the Graduate Program in Economic Development.

GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS
The winners of the "Rendigs Fels Award for Graduate Excellence" for the academic year of 2011-12 are Ayse Sapci (in the photo with DGS Kevin Huang) and Sunghoon Hong. The award is presented annually in honor of Professor Rendig Fels, at a ceremony held by the Economics Department with the staff, faculty, graduate students and teaching assistants all in attendance. Ruixuan Liu, Nam Tuan Vu, Li Zhao and Benjamin Ward are the recipients of the 2012 Kirk Dornbush Summer Research Grants from the Department of Economics. Congratulations and may you have a productive summer!

The winner of the Noel Dissertation Fellowship for AY 2012-2013 is Youngwoo Rho.

Ph.D. candidate Matt Gentry has accepted a faculty position at the London School of Economics. -
Katie Shester (Ph.D. 2011) has been selected as the winner of the Economic History Association's Allan Nevins Prize for the best dissertation on a North American topic. 
The new Gender Inequality Index used in the 2010 Human Development Report prepared by the United Nations Development Programme is constructed using an index introduced in the recent Vanderbilt Ph.D. thesis, ESSAYS IN MULTIDIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENT: WELFARE, POVERTY, AND ROBUSTNESS, by Suman Seth (Ph.D. 2010). Seth is currently a Research Officer for the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative of the University of Oxford. 
Mostafa Beshkar (Ph.D. 2008) was selected as a runner up in the WTO's essay contest for young economists.
