The Department of Economics announces the creation of two new funds to support the research activities of doctoral students and undergraduate honors students. Two existing funds support diverse activities within the Department and provide scholarships for students in the Graduate Program in Economic Development. With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Department of Economics at Vanderbilt University will recruit new Ph.D. students whose research interests include health and health policy. Arts & Science Magazine, November 2010 Issue: 5 Minutes with Mouzon Siddiqi Dale Mortensen, recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Economics, visited the Vanderbilt Economics Department in the Spring of 2010 as the guest speaker for the Steine Lecture. To view a video of the lecture, click here. Saggi wants to answer 'the big questions' How do you solve poverty? How do developing countries catch up? How does a nation grow? These “big questions” are what inspired India-born Kamal Saggi to take up economics as an undergraduate at Ohio Wesleyan University. He’s devoted his career to chipping away at solutions, and going forward, he’ll do his research from Nashville. Read the full story>> Jeremy Atack named president-elect of Economic History Association A Vanderbilt economics professor has been named the president-elect of the Economic History Association. Jeremy Atack, professor of economics and history, will take office on Sept. 10, 2011. He was elected during the association’s business meeting this month in Boston. Read the full story »
Vanderbilt named to 'honor roll' for women full professors in economics Tong Li, professor of economics and chair of the department, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to support his work on analyzing auction data, studying bidders’ strategic behavior, and addressing policy-related questions using game-theoretic models and state-of-art econometric methods.
Regular Weekly Seminars The department offers regular weekly seminars.  The usual schedule is: The Dornbush/Roby Seminar Series: Including departmental, empirical, statistical and international economic seminars are held in room 423, Calhoun Hall at 3:10 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. (unless otherwise indicated) The Steine Lecture Series:   The next lecture will be Friday, February 17th, 2011, (time and location to be determined). The guest speaker is Chris Sims of Princeton University. The McGee Lecture Series:  The next lecture will be held Thursday, March 24, 2011, time and place to be determined. The guest speaker is Janet Currie of Columbia University. Conferences The 2011 Midwest Macroeconomics Meetings will be held at Vanderbilt University, May 20th-22nd, 2011. The Centers for International Price Research and the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank hosted a conference at Vanderbilt University on September 24th and 25th, 2010. In cooperation with Vanderbilt University the Association for Public Economic Theory (APET) hosted PET 07 Nashville, held July 6th-8th 2007. Click here for more information. The GPED celebrated their 50th Anniversary with the conference, "Globalization and the Developing Countries" from November 10th-12th, 2006. Click here for more information. April 22nd-24th, 2005, the Economics Department hosted the 2005 Midwest International Economics and Economic Theory Meetings. The Economic History Association held it's annual conference on September 19th-21st, 2003 at Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt's College of Arts and Science, Vanderbilt Law School and Owen Graduate School of Management cosponsored the Baseball Economics Conference, February 21, 2003.
